Two reading recommendations for those who are interested:
- More on the spectre of ’72—New York Magazine’s Ed Kilgore has done a fine piece that covers much of what I wrote in my own post on the subject, but a lot more. I especially appreciated Kilgore’s obvious point, which I had neglected, that the Democratic New Deal Coalition had already collapsed in 1968. In almost winning that 3-party contest, Humphrey did little better than McGovern’s percentage of the vote in the disaster of ‘72
- The Mideast Peace Farce—I have only minor disagreements with Thomas Friedman’s excellent op ed in today’s NYT.
